Mogale Tailings Retreatment (MTR)
At the heart of Pan African Resources’ long-term growth strategy, the Mogale Tailings Retreatment (MTR) project reflects our commitment to delivering world-class, sustainable gold recovery operations. Developed at the Group’s Mintails site, this cutting-edge tailings facility was commissioned on 3 October 2024, completed ahead of schedule and under its R2.5-billion budget in just 14 months.
Designed for scale, performance, and efficiency, MTR strengthens our proven tailings retreatment track record while creating long-term value for stakeholders and surrounding communities.
MTR: Turning Legacy into Long-Life, Low-Cost Production
Our newest surface retreatment operation is already contributing meaningful, low-AISC ounces to Pan African’s growth profile. Mogale extends our proven tailings strategy, converting dormant gold resources into reliable, sustainable production with rapid payback and strong cash generation. It’s a key step toward our 300koz growth horizon, purpose-built, capital-disciplined and operationally de-risked.

Why MTR
Acquired at a compelling US$1.33 per resource ounce, MTR offers scale, grade, and low technical risk, underpinned by a robust DFS demonstrating attractive returns at conservative gold prices.
By ramping up volumes to over 900 ktpm, we are transforming what was once a stranded resource into a long-life, high-margin operation that diversifies our production profile and delivers tangible, long-term value.

Rehabilitation and Renewable Energy
Our concurrent environmental rehabilitation of these tailings impoundments and surrounding areas is already improving air and water quality in the area, while reducing the scourge of illegal mining.
Our commitment to renewable energy paves our journey towards more sustainable mining. A feasibility study has already been commissioned for a 20MW solar renewable energy plant at our MTR operation as we continue to track ahead of our Group energy mix plan.
Empowering Local Communities
The MTR project is transforming job creation in a region in urgent need of employment. Initially projected to generate 700 jobs during construction and 300 during operations, the site has far exceeded expectations.
Currently, 1,600 people are employed on-site, with 500 roles continuing long-term to support surface re-mining. We are proud to highlight that 1,040 of these jobs have gone to local community members, a testament to our strong community engagement initiatives.
Our commitment to social upliftment extends beyond employment. Through our social and labour plans, we have invested in education and local infrastructure, creating far-reaching benefits that support sustainable local enterprise development and unlock new economic opportunities for the region.
Responsible Tailings Re-Mining
MTR is built on the principles of responsible mining, repurposing legacy tailings while reducing environmental risks.
By removing and rehabilitating these historic dumps, the project mitigates potential hazards and restores land for future use – ensuring environmental compliance and adding social value to surrounding communities.
Further Upside Potential: Soweto Cluster
In addition to its core operations, the MTR project unlocks long-term value through the adjacent Soweto Cluster, a significant pipeline of historic tailings resources situated in proximity to the current plant.
These additional dumps present a compelling opportunity to extend MTR’s life-of-mine and increase future gold production without major infrastructure investment.
The integration of the Soweto Cluster into future phases of the project supports scalable growth, efficient resource utilisation, and continued economic upliftment for the surrounding region.

FAQ's
Frequently Asked Questions About MTR
What is tailings retreatment?
Tailings retreatment is the process of re-mining and reprocessing the waste material, or “tailings”, left behind after initial mineral extraction. These tailings often still contain significant amounts of gold or other valuable minerals.
At Pan African Resources, this method allows us to extract additional value from historic dumps while rehabilitating the land and minimising environmental impact.
Where is MTR located?
The Mogale Tailings Retreatment Plant is located near Krugersdorp, on the West Rand of Gauteng, South Africa. This region is home to extensive historic tailings storage facilities, making it an ideal site for large-scale, sustainable gold recovery mining operations.
